Peter Doig

27 July – 10 September 2022

Studio Casoli, Filicudi is pleased to announce an exhibition by Peter Doig. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition in Italy. Peter Doig is one of the most influential and internationally-renowned painters working today.

This exhibition will present an intimate selection of works. Peter Doig captures timeless scene of mysterious beauty. Doig said in an interview in 1995, “I’d love to think that the paintings were like movies and that the viewer becomes the director of the movie”. Today, his paintings bring viewers in a magical and oneiric state of mind, where you get lost, surprised and disoriented. The characters and objects anchored in Doig’s artworks are transformed into a bright palette of dreams. The artist’s oeuvre is a journey of genuine imagination between reality and non-reality, connected with the history of painting.

Peter Doig was born in Edinburgh in 1959 and grew up in Trinidad and Canada before moving to London in 1979 to study painting. He currently lives and works between London and Trinidad. Doig was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994 and served as a Trustee of the Tate from 1995 to 2000. He was a professor of painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 2004-2017. Doig has been the subject of important museum exhibitions worldwide, including a major mid-career survey organized by Tate Britain, London, in 2008; Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, in 2013; Fondation Beyeler, Basel, in 2014. In 2020 an exhibition was on view at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. Peter Doig’s works are included in major museums including MoMA, MET, Whitney, New York; Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Bourse de Commerce, Paris.
