26 June – 17 July 2022
Opaque today the line between sea and sky.
The elements merge,
surrendering their autonomy.
Have we arrived,
my adolescent soul?
Here, I will tear up the passport
and lose the fear of time.
Deities in swimsuits
brushing the rocks with their feet,
smiling at me.
Giovanni Gastel, Filicudi 2013
Studio Casoli is pleased to host È un’isola, an exhibition by Giovanni Gastel, one of Italy’s most respected and well-known contemporary photographers.
A selection of photos, taken by Giovanni with a Canon G 11, capture images and emotions of Filicudi, where he spent his summers for the past two decades. A story, a diary full of memories and silent landscapes, to which Giovanni entrusted his feelings and thoughts.
Giovanni Gastel (1955-2021) was born in Milan on December 27, 1955, to Giuseppe Gastel and Ida Visconti di Modrone, sister of Luchino Visconti. He began his long career as a photographer in the late 1970s, collaborating with Donna magazine and approaching the world of fashion. Germano Celant curated a solo exhibition of his work at the Triennale in Milan in 1997 and a retrospective at Palazzo della Ragione in Milan in 2016. Recently, the photographer has dedicated himself to portraits, a passion that culminates in exhibitions at the MAXXI Museum in Rome in 2020 and at the Triennale in Milan in 2021.
Special thanks to Anna Radice Fossati, Marco and Luchino Gastel, Micaela Sessa, Livia Peraldo (Elle Decor), and the Giovanni Gastel Archive.
